Support Group Guidelines

Facilitator:  Stacey Hill, RN

Purpose:  As sisters in a “club” we never intended to join, we extend life long membership to all ovarian cancer patients and survivors.  We strive to fill each others’ lives with hope, strength, knowledge, and the ability to endure the journey and give back to others what we have learned.

Meeting Information: 5:30 pm, on the last Tuesday of each month.   The group meets at Tennessee Valley Gynecologic Oncology (TVGO, 532 Madison Street.  Occasionally we may meet at a restaurant or event as needed.

Cost:  None.

Structure:  Each meeting is focused on a certain topic as it relates to ovarian cancer. We may occasionally have a guest speaker to give a 15-20 minute introduction at the start of the meeting.  This will be followed by 30 minutes of discussion on the topic as it relates to cancer.  Members will then have 30 minutes to share their experiences with cancer and ways to cope with those experiences.  We will close with a short inspirational message.

Meeting Guidelines:

Everything shared at these meetings should be held in strictest confidence.

Meetings are for ovarian cancer survivors.  The National Cancer Institute defines a survivor as:

“anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life.”

Members may bring family members or caregivers, who will form a breakout group, with each group meeting
separately at the same time and location.

A member contact list will be furnished to all members.

Humor and kindness are much welcomed.

A healthy appreciation for others’ opinions (even if they aren’t the same as our own) will make us all more
                        open minded.

Members should be conscientious of time, allowing all members an opportunity to speak.

Information about other events or groups that may be of interest to the members should be shared at the end
of the meeting if time and interest permits.

Informational items should be given to the facilitator before being passed out to determine if they need board
approval.  The facilitator will coordinate the distribution of such information to members at the end
                        of the meeting.

“A true friend unbosoms freely, advises justly, assists readily, adventures boldly, takes all patiently, defends courageously, and continues a friend unchangeably.”  --William Penn
