Volunteers needed:

Health Fair Coordinator:  When health fairs are scheduled, coordinate volunteers and set up/take down display at the health fair location.  Display is easy to set up and take down and you do not personally have to volunteer at the health fair as long as you have others to staff it.  Must be able to communicate via email so that you can give volunteers clear directions.  You also need storage space to keep the health fair materials (a closet will do) or you will need to be willing to pick it up and take it back to where it can be stored in a convenient location.  We have approximately 6-8 health fairs a year.

Health Fair Volunteers:  Volunteers work 2-3 hour shifts at health fairs as needed to distribute awareness materials.  No medical advice is given, volunteers just give materials with a ready smile.  Health fair coordinator supplies directions to event and parking details.  Event dates are listed on Bulletin Board page as they become available (see list for active dates!).

Good news for ovarian cancer research. We had asked for funding of $20mm, thought it might be cut to $10mm, and ended up with $16mm. If you want to be part of the constituency that lobbies for funding, you can sign up with OCNA. Go to www.ovariancancer.org.

There is wonderful news out of Washington today for women with ovarian cancer and those who care about them. Congress has passed an omnibus appropriations bill for this fiscal year, which includes everything we asked for!

The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance fought for funding to support critical ovarian cancer research and education programs. Despite the difficult economy, we won!

We won $5 million for Johanna's Law: The Gynecologic Education and Awareness Act, which received no funding in last year's appropriations bill.
We won $4.9 million for the Ovarian Cancer Control Initiative, which was initially cut from the funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
We won $16 million for the Ovarian Cancer Research Program (OCRP) run by the Department of Defense. This is a tremendous victory, as the Senate initially proposed funding of just $10 million. The Alliance organized a letter, signed by our Partner Members and colleague organizations, that urged Congress to support the House funding level of $16 million. The letter noted that "the OCRP's unique method of funding ovarian cancer research has yielded tremendous breakthroughs in the fight against ovarian cancer."
We are grateful to the many members of Congress who supported our requests, especially Representatives Dan Burton and Rosa DeLauro. They took the lead on a letter that encouraged funding for the OCRP, saying "Designed to promote increased flexibility, OCRP research produces innovative, high impact and valuable results through strategic partnerships between advocates, lab scientists and clinicians."

Thank you to all the advocates who sent thousands of emails and made scores of calls to Congress this year, letting them know just how many Americans are touched by ovarian cancer–and why we need dedicated funding for education and research. We could not have done this without you.

Relay for Life was held at John Hunt Park on Friday, May 17, 2013. Lilies of the Valley had a team, but the event was pretty much a "wash out" because of the pouring down rain. Thank you  to the team, even if you didn't walk: Marjorie Bermudez, Judy Berkowitz, Susan Herring, Regina Parker, and our top money-raiser, new member Tammi Scruggs. We'll just have to hope for better weather next go around!

On September 4, 2012, several Lilies traveled to Montgomery where Mrs. Bentley declared the day Ovarian/Gynecological Cancer Day. After a lovely ceremony, the Capitol was lit in teal for the evening.

The Lilies of the Valley Legacy of Hope Fund exists for the sole purpose of fulfilling our mission of member support.  Members of Lilies of the Valley are ovarian cancer survivors.  The Legacy of Hope Fund aims to offer assistance to a member or her family that may not be available through other organizations.  Awards from the Legacy of Hope Fund may provide assistance for finances, emotional well-being, or physical comfort, through both direct and indirect methods of delivery.  Recognizing that the “cost” of belonging to such a group is already high, the Legacy of Hope Fund does not necessarily grant awards based on financial need.  Primarily funds are awarded according to availability, number of requests, and the overall impact of the type of support received.  Therefore, though all applications are considered, not all applications are rewarded.

Applications are reviewed monthly with an approximate three week processing time. 
Please turn in applications for review by the 15th of the month.

What is causing you stress?  That is what the Legacy fund strives to solve. The Legacy of Hope could provide headcoverings, meal delivery, pet sitting or boarding, financial or other planning and consultation.  Sometimes those who travel for medical care may need a little extra help with gas money or others could use some assistance with meals. 

Perhaps a family member is on bedrest and needs some assistance.  A remote control doorbell could be of great assistance to prevent her from calling out for help.  Pet therapy, balloons, or flowers may offer cheer. A pet sitter, dog walker, or an overnight sitter service, even for just a night or two, could offer help for the whole family.

Others who are recovering well may need a little extra something to help such as a yoga, physical therapy or exercise class, professional couseling, or even a massage or spa service to get them jump-started to well-being. 

Some of our Lilies are celebrating huge milestones, ending chemotherapy or survival anniversaries, and these definitely need acknowledgement, maybe with a celebration dinner!

Others want more information than they can find in our area and seek to travel far and wide to find it.  The Legacy of Hope is a great place to turn for assistance with travel expenses related to ovarian cancer. 

These are only a few ideas of things the Legacy of Hope could offer.  Only you know what you need to make this experience more tolerable.  Please apply to the Legacy of Hope for whatever will make you feel more supported!

This fund is managed externally by a separate committee from Lilies of the Valley, called the Lilies of the Valley Legacy of Hope Committee.  All applications received and all awards distributed are handled anonymously, unless the applicant chooses to share the information with others.

The Lilies of the Valley Garden of Life and Remembrance is located on the Gateway Greenway on Meridian Street in downtown Huntsville. It is a place to celebrate and remember those affected by gynecologic cancers.

 You can help us plant seeds in the garden and establish a lasting legacy by purchasing a brick in honor or in memory of a woman who has been or was diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer*. Corporate and individual sponsorships are also available.

October 2011 Garden Update:
If you have visited the Garden of Life and Remembrance recently, you may have noticed that there has been some plant loss. We experienced a problem with our irrigation system, and the overwatering caused the loss of several of the boxwoods in the borders around the garden. We are having all of the boxwoods removed, and the beds mulched. In the spring we will replant those areas. In September we added bricks that were ordered this year, and we have added names to the base of our Spirit of Hope Statue.  We hope you will continue to enjoy the garden.
 

Brick Orders may be placed anytime throughout the year and are installed annually in September.  Orders must be received before the end of June to be placed in September of the same year.  Orders placed after June will be installed in September of the following year.  Orders received in the fall will be placed the September of the following year.

*Gynecologic cancers include cancers of the cervix, ovary, endometrium, uterus, vulva or vagina.
