Lilies and the Quilt
Sally's Quilt
Lilies of the Valley Survivor's Quilts will be used as a history of our group and also as part of our awareness
campaign. The quilts will be comprised of individual blocks made by
survivors to tell their stories. One central block will include our logo
and the blocks will be brought together with a teal fabric. The backing
will be one of the ovarian cancer awareness materials that Pat Kyser, out
volunteer organizer, has
found for us.
This
project starts with YOU. If you are interested in participating by making
a block, just follow the instructions below.
1.
Design your block. It should tell us something
about you. Here is a link to the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Awareness
Quilt where you can find examples of quilt blocks. You can click on any of
the squares in the quilt and get a close-up of the block.
http://www.mnovarian.org/quilt.htm.
Keep in mind the finished block with be 8" x 8" and will be on a white
background. Also somewhere in your design try to use a little teal.
Applique and embroidery techniques work well for this kind of project.
Photographs can be copied onto fabric. Somewhere in your design please add
your name (Could be embroidered in small print in one corner). Please make
sure that all fabrics you use in your design are prewashed and colorfast
to prevent any fading, running of colors or shrinkage if the quilt is
cleaned. No beads, bangles, buttons or baubles. Everything should be
firmly attached so the quilt will travel well and be easily cleaned if
needed.
2. When you have your design finished contact Susan Leighton
by clicking here and she will get a
block of material to you so that you can get started sewing. Please do not
buy your own fabric as we want it all the same. We also have some pieces
of teal material and if you need a piece to include in your design, let
Susan know telling her about how much you need.
3.
Some of you have indicated that you do not think you have the creative
ability or sewing skills to do a block but still would like to be a part
of this project. Don't worry, there is help. When you have a design idea
put together you can either have a friend help you out or Pat Kyser has
offered to hold group classes to help you. Just
contact Susan and we will get you
scheduled to meet with Pat.
4. Return your finished block to Susan. We will put the quilt
together when we have enough blocks.
5. Please include with your finished block a piece of paper including
your name and a brief description of your block telling what the design
means.

Our volunteers consist of survivors, family members, or community
members who want to help raise awareness about ovarian cancer.
Many opportunities exist for individuals or organizations to help!
